Microgrid Support Services

C-MAP offers on-demand technical assistance for microgrid communities, with support that can range from a one-hour consultation to as much as 60 hours of tailored assistance from a national laboratory expert. Communities can apply at any time, and all support is provided at no cost for those who meet eligibility requirements.

C-MAP matches each community with the right subject-matter expert—technical or nontechnical—based on the nature of the request. Support can include activities such as data collection, planning, decision support, training, or facilitation, all customized to the community's needs.

C-MAP's First Microgrid Webinar Series

The C-MAP webinar series is designed to help remote and isolated communities explore how microgrids can improve energy access, reliability, and affordability. Funded by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Electricity and managed by the National Laboratory of the Rockies, this six-part series offers practical guidance on several stages of microgrid planning and performance, providing communities with the tools to advance microgrid projects that strengthen local energy systems and support future growth.

• System Integration for Microgrids: Planning to Add New Generation and Storage Assets
  • Date and time: August 20, 2026, at 1-2:30 p.m. MT
• This webinar, presented by the National Laboratory of the Rockies, will explore how to plan and sequence the addition of new generation and storage assets in a microgrid. Attendees will see how system constraints shape integration decisions, what technical prerequisites—such as energy resources, controls, protections, and operating limits—must be in place, and how to align project goals with the requirements for stable, safe, and reliable operation. Attendees will gain a clearer sense of what to add, when to add it, and how to avoid common microgrid integration pitfalls.
• Controls and SCADA Best Practices for Microgrid Operations

• This webinar, presented by the University of Fairbanks Alaska Center for Energy and Power, will break down what reliable day-to-day microgrid operation looks like, focusing on how to use controls and real-time monitoring systems effectively. Presenters will highlight the practices that make the biggest difference—reducing unnecessary trips, managing equipment cycling, and handling variable generation—and walk through what to watch for so issues are caught early. Attendees will come away with practical habits and tools to keep their microgrid performing at its best.
• Procurement and Commissioning for Microgrids: Requirements, Testing, and Acceptance

• This webinar, presented by the National Laboratory of the Rockies, will share best procurement and commissioning practices for microgrid projects. Presenters will cover what must be spelled out in procurement documents, how to think about factory acceptance testing versus site acceptance testing, and what to expect before signing off on new equipment. Presenters will also highlight common interface and responsibility gaps—especially around subcontracting—that can slow down commissioning and how to avoid them.
• Planning for Microgrid Operations and Maintenance: What To Do, How Often, and What It Takes

• This webinar, presented by the National Laboratory of the Rockies, will cover what it really takes to plan and manage microgrid operations and maintenance. Presenters will outline the essential operations and maintenance activities every system needs, highlight typical maintenance intervals to support long-term planning and budgeting, and show how to organize tasks and tracking in a way that works for any microgrid configuration. Attendees will gain a practical framework for keeping their systems running smoothly over time.
• Making IPPs/PPAs Work: From Project Concept to Contract and Operations
  • Date and time: Dec. 17, 2026, at 1-2:30 p.m. MT
• This webinar, presented by DeerStone Consulting, will help communities understand when an independent power producer (IPP) or power purchase agreement (PPA) is the right fit for a microgrid project. Presenters will walk through the full pathway—from preparing an early concept to managing day-to-day operations—highlighting the key steps, decision points, and commercial terms that shape a successful deal. Attendees will also hear practical lessons from real community projects to help assess risks, allocate responsibilities, and decide whether an IPP/PPA structure makes sense for a particular situation.
• From Scenarios to Decisions: Practical Financial Modeling for Microgrids
  • Date and time: Jan. 21, 2027, at 1-2:30 p.m. MT
• This webinar, presented by the University of Fairbanks Alaska Center for Energy and Power, will introduce a practical, scenario-based approach to financial modeling for microgrids. Attendees will see how to run a technology-agnostic screening model to compare generation and storage options, interpret the inputs and sensitivities that drive sizing decisions, and use the results to narrow in on what's worth pursuing. Presenters will also identify where to get support, what information to bring to technical or financial partners, and what outputs to request to move confidently from analysis to decision-making.
