Nuclear waste from small modular reactors

Publicly accessible License

Peer-reviewed study comparing fuel cycles, spent fuel characteristics, and disposal implications for several small modular reactor concepts. Results indicate many designs produce more waste per unit energy and introduce diverse waste streams that complicate handling, storage, and disposal. The article discusses uncertainties, assumptions, and policy implications, providing a technical basis for evaluating waste-management strategies as SMR deployment scenarios are considered.
