U.S. Enhanced Geothermal Systems
Enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) can unlock geothermal resources in areas without naturally permeable reservoirs by creating engineered fractures to extract heat. NREL's EGS dataset rates potential sites across the United States by integrating geologic temperatures, depths, and cost estimates to derive a relative favorability index. The shapefiles highlight areas where deep EGS development may be technically and economically attractive, supporting resource assessment and research planning. Users can overlay the favorability data with other spatial layers to identify candidate regions for further exploration and investment.
