National Risk Index
The National Risk Index (NRI) is a composite risk assessment created by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to help communities understand their relative vulnerability to natural hazards. Available through an interactive map, the NRI combines hazard frequency and severity with social vulnerability and community resilience indicators to calculate a Risk Index score for each county and census tract in the United States. Users can explore risk rankings for hazards such as floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, and wildfire, as well as underlying factors like social vulnerability and expected annual loss. The tool supports hazard mitigation planning, resource prioritization, and public awareness.
